There Is No Alternative To Excellence

Just a few days ago, some “internet experts” commented that I shouldn’t always claim that the stuff I use is the best, and that I shouldn’t keep encouraging people to join our programs.

I see a huge problem with this thought process.

The basis of the success at my Singapore Personal Training Center, is, and always will be – helping people get results.

And if they are not getting results, to find the obstacle (toxicity, emotional eating, food intolerance, etc) that are getting in their way.

I travel about 6-8 weeks per year, every year to learn from the best in the world, how to help my clients accomplish my goals. Why? Because I want to help them get the most excellent solution for their problem.

Some of these solutions are not the common solution, they are not the most well known solution, and they may not the cheapest solution but they will be safe and will very, very often be effective.

I don’t take credit for them, because I learned them from an expert in the field, as in many things, we stand on the shoulders of giants.

But consider the alternatives to excellence – and their problems

I don’t care about continuous education - “Oh I studied hard in my 20s so now I don’t have to” is an actual argument I have heard from an apparently learned person. In any industry today, it is learn-”ing” – continuously that matters. The “learn-ed” (past tense) unfortunately can quickly find themselves out of date and left behind.

I don’t try to get the best supplements, detox and nutritional products – and settle for cheaper, but less pure or less effective solutions? There is a phase that I first heard from life coach Zig Ziglar – “It is better to explain cost one time, than to explain lack of results forever”.

I don’t try to get the best equipment – I have actually tried this, and it was a necessity many years ago when we had our first small gym with little capital and no clients! It was necessary then because lower quality equipment was cheaper. However as soon as I had saved up enough money, we upgrade to the best possible equipment – and will continue to do so. It gives better results, and enables more exercise options (it also looks so cool!). I’m certainly not a fancy guy who goes out to buy a Ferrari when business grows. In fact in July 2010, we will have 2 entire containers of the best equipment money can buy arriving at Genesis.

I don’t care about clients, but rather about profits - In business there is a saying that you are known not by the deals you make, but by the deals you turn down. Those who know me personally, know that I have turned down many lucrative deals and profit making opportunities because the deals or the people who offered the deals did not match my values and the values of Genesis.

  • I have turned down offers of corporate contracts because they would not give me the time or space or consistency to get results for their clients.
  • I have turned down offers from many Multi Level Marketing (MLM) companies because their products did not give my clients the best value. Just name the MLM companies you know, and I have probably turned down an offer from their salespeople.
  • I have turned down offers from clients because they wanted to do things in a way that would not get them the best results.

Yes, these would have resulted in more business for “competitors” but that is ok. Excellence is a core value both personally and corporately. No compromises – or else its not a value!

If there is an area where we have not reached excellence yet, we are striving for it, and will not compromise with sub standard services or products.

In addition, excellence is an ever shifting goal, just like it is for our personal training, nutritional consultation and fitness boot camp clients. As they get stronger, leaner, faster etc they realize that they can do even better! At first, fitting into an old pair of pants may be excellent, but then the goal shifts to seeing their abs in a nice “six pack” for the first time, then it shifts to performing a 2x body weight squat etc.

So please don’t be upset as I shift the standards for myself, my staff, my clients and our Singapore fitness center higher and higher. That is the only way I know how.

“Excellence is the result of utilizing each day to be better than the last”
