Just something I learned about the manufacture of fish oil from our lecture on toxicity.
Did you know that the cost of purification (getting rid of toxins, heavy metals that cause cancer and stop enzyme and hormone function) of fish oil is much higher than the cost of obtaining the oil in the first place?
So that is how cheap brands save costs!
With supplements always get the best that you can find. They are the parachute of your health – and you don’t try to save money on parachutes do you!

Not one of the benefits we get from fish oil!I have had personal training and fitness boot camp clients at the Genesis Performance Center who had bad experiences with their previous fish oil capsules saying that they got some smelly burps when they took fish oil and thus, they don’t want to take the amount I reccomend for their optimal health, muscle building, weight loss and fat loss results (which are the benefits of a good fish oil).

Here is the problem…

Firstly your fish oil is not good quality and/or has gone bad. Rancid (rotting in basic terms) oil is not healthy at all and is actually bad for you. A bad or overly fishy smell when you open the bottle is a good sign of this.

A good fish oil supplement will have some built in antioxidants (probably Vitamin E) to reduce the oxidation and damage to the oil. So don’t be a cheapo and get good fish oil. Or at least don’t get cheap stuff and then complain that it doesn’t work!

Second you can try to put the capsules in the freezer and eat them cold. This also seems to help alot (I’m not really sure why!) The oil will turn “cloudy” but its still good!

But all these problems go away once they start taking our medical grade fish oil.

One of my clients asked this question this week.
Answer: It is fine. When stored in the cold, the oil can turn cloudy but is fully functional and is good to use. There is nothing wrong with cooling and even freezing fish oil.

It is far worse to keep unstable oils like omega-3 fish or krill oil or flax seeds or flax seed oils out in a warm place and have it turn smelly and rancid. That would actually be bad for you.

Here are a few questions that I was asked by our personal training and Singapore boot camp fitness clients last week. I hope these answers help you with your health, fitness, weight loss and fat loss goals too.

  • What seafoods are ok and not…for example I love prawns and crabs ..are they ok as meal – yes they are fine as long as you don’t have an allergy to them. They are actually healthy and very nutritious! (and won’t make you fat!
  • For the snack, can i replace egg with cheese? what other alternatives i have (Yoghurt, etc?) – I would stick with eggs over cheese although cheese is not a bad choice either. Eggs just have a higher amount of protein. I am not a big fan of yogurt because it tends to be highly processed and high in sugar.
  • If i miss or cheat on my diet like last night. do i make it up the next day by taking less? – If you end up eating a bad meal, RELAX:) guilt probably raises stress hormones and makes you even fatter! Just get back to healthy food ASAP. That is the main thing. The wrong responses are to skip meals, or to continue eating bad stuff since “I already messed up”.
  • For the coffee before training. Do I take it for big training (like on wed) or do i take it even if I do my intervals trainings/swims – Coffee is fine before intervals.
  • Is coffee with low fat milk bad? I have a habit of taking it quite often..should i stop? I also use Equal instead of sugar.. is that acceptable? – I would go with heavy cream and cinnamon which slow down the caffine release and increase fat burning. I am not for artificial sweeteners unless absolutely necessary.
  • My fishoil at home is 1200mg per capsule. How many do I take..taking 4 per meal doesn’t sound right – It is right, depending on your current level of body fat. The fatter you are, the more healthy fats you need to take to increase your insulin sensitivity (and a bunch of other good reasons too!)

I would like to think of myself as a fairly wise investor. I am no Warren Buffet of course but I do save as much as I can, and I do treat money with respect because it is an important thing. One of the main things about saving is compound interest. It makes saving one of the smartest things we can do.

A financial example I read recently: If I start saving for my future children’s college education (yeah, its a while away and yes, I’m working on the children part) now, and I save $200 per month for 10 years in a decent fund with 6.8% returns, I will end up with about $34400. Enough for local tertiary education. No problem at all.

But if I borrow that amount and pay it back over 10 years at the same 6.8% interest, I pay back $400 per month! Thats DOUBLE!!!
Not smart at all.

But this is exactly what people do with health isn’t it? No resources (time, money, brain power etc) spent spent on health and fitness most of their life, but then 1 sudden illness or surgery and ugh the payback is really high. Not just financially but also emotionally

I really encourage all the people around me to invest in health. Because there is no real way to “pay it back” later. Anyway it only takes 3 hours of proper exercise per week to maintain health! That’s less than most people watch TV per day!

It only cost’s a few dollars a day to get a fish oil, a digestive aid, and a multi vitamin. Less than most people spend on a Starbucks…
