HELP! I need a Detox!

HELP! I need a Detox!

As a Singapore personal trainer, my clients trust me with their health and ask me all kinds of questions. One often asked question by our fitness boot camp and personal training clients is “what about detox? – do I need it? – how should I go about it?”

There are so many people and companies offering detox products. But detox is a complex situation. Your body is actually capable of most of the detox processes. But you need to support it with the right nutrients to the right places for the right tasks.

Here is how I do it. I learned from a mentor who is a brilliant functional medicine doctor and one of the most sought after detox specialists in the world.

Firstly, everybody is different and needs different detoxes. How do you know if you need a detox? Well… we all do! The world is a toxic place, our food is not as nutritious as it should be, and our stress levels are way above what our ancestors are used to dealing with.

One indicator of a need for detox is the inability to lose bodyfat even though you do other things right! Great nutrition, hard training, correct supplements and you get stuck – the primary reason is toxicity!

So when a client like this comes for a consultation, I check their health history, and their Biosignature (a method of determining health conditions from body fat storage patterns devised by Olympic coach Charles Poliquin). I also use a questionaire to determine if there are other issues like problems with neurotrainsmitters (brain signals), liver, adrenal gland (stress) and other organ issues. I also check digestion and mineral levels.

If a detox is needed, I usually use a combination of medicinal food (guaranteed potency, purity, and effectiveness) which is non allergic, as well as an organic greens/fruit supplement, and fiber. In addition, according to the client’s needs, I would use a variety of nutrients to support the liver, gall bladder and digestive tract in detoxification.

Finally I would add supplements according to the clients “main problem” it might be stuff to take out heavy metal poisons, plastics and excess bad estrogen.

This goes on for 1 week. There might be some nausea or headaches because the liver is working hard to get rid of all the bad stuff from your body. That is why it is so important to support the liver!

After this week your fat burning, muscle building and health will be back on the fast track.

Doing this 2x/ year is recommended because Singapore is a crowded and polluted place. We need to keep our bodies clean to maximize our health, productivity and quality of life.

You would be amazed how few personal training programs in Singapore have NO SYSTEM for helping clients learn about nutrition. That is simply madness. There is no way to “out-train” bad eating unless you are a full time athlete training 4-5 hours per day.

Teaching is as important as knowing. So I came up with this to teach my clients a simple way to think about which carbohydrates are good, and which are bad especially with regards to fat loss, but also with regards to nutrition value and possibility of intolerance, allergy and health benefits. With the top being the best…

1.    Green veggies

2.    Non-Green Veggies

3.    Lower fructose fruits – Apricots, avocado (1/3 medium; yes, it’s a fruit) blackberries (1/2 cup), figs, grapefruit (1/2 medium) papaya, peach, plum, raspberries (1/2 cup) strawberries (1/2 cup) tomato (yes, also a fruit)

4.    Higher Fructose Fruits – apple, banana, cherries (1 Cup) grapes (1 Cup) mango, melon (2 wedges), orange, pear pineapple, (2 rings), watermelon (1 large slice)

5.    High Nutrient Natural Starches – yam, sweet potato, tapioca

6.    Grains – bread, pasta etc (rice falls under here too, but its not as problematic)

7.    Nonsense crappy starch foods – the rest!

We Both Know That Is A 7

We Both Know That Is A "7"

If you are naturally tolerant to starches and are already lean, stay at number 1-5 with an occasional 6 if you have no grain related allergies. If you are a natural fat boy (opps that includes me…) stay within number 1-3 for best fat loss results. If you are very overly fat – more than 20% for women and 15-18% for men then stay within 1-2… If you don’t care about losing fat, or getting leaner, or being healthy and living long, eat number 7 all day:)

If you are one of our personal training or athletic performance clients, the biosignature analysis will help you find what types of starches and carbohydrates you can handle well.

Now I’m upset! I’m not a big fan of the pharmaceutical industry to begin with. Drugs in general mask symptoms and do not treat root causes of disease. But this one really takes the cake.

Is This REALLY Going To Solve Anything?

Is This REALLY Going To Solve Anything?

“Scientists” – probably ones who don’t take their health seriously… have found a drug that simulates exercise and put it into a pill… the magical “exercise in a pill” drug

Firstly, nobody is going to be great with this kind of thing. Sure you may boost a bit of muscle activity here and there which is great for maybe bed ridden people with serious illness. But nobody is going to get a great physique this way.

Second, human testing is a world away from testing on rats.

Third and this is a big one, it makes the rats LONG DISTANCE RUNNERS! the worst kind of athelete to become for general health. The pill actually causes the fast twitch, powerful muscle fibers, to become weeny, small slow twitch ones. That is what people who exercise properly work so hard to correct in the first place!

This is a huge disadvantage. Don’t be fooled by scams. Many drugs cause more problems than they solve. Disease is removed by increasing health, not by faking it. The analogy that I like most is that drugs simply mask symptoms of a deeper problem.

It is like a tree in your garden that is wilting and all it’s leaves turn yellow and its bark is falling off… do you…

A: Paint the leaves green and the bark brown and pretend all is well?

or

B: Find out what in the water/soil/environment is KILLING the tree and fix that issue?

B is so obviously the answer for this tree, but for our own bodies, we go for A – drugs that mask deeper problems.

Always fix the causes not the symptoms.

The correct types of nutrients, soft tissue therapy and exercise fix just about any degenrative disease. That is what we try to do at the Genesis Performance Center with out personal training, bootcamp and biosignature programs.
